A STUDY ON THE TECHNIQUE OF TEACHING READING IN THE ENGLISH CLASSES AT SDN KALIPANG I SUTOJAYAN BLITAR

English in Indonesia is taught since Elementary school. As the Ministerial Degree No.060/U/1993 that teaching English can be started and introduced to the fourth grade of Elementary School. The contents of the program include language skills and language elements. English teaching and learning process at Elementary school includes reading based on the level of their ability on the simple material. Reading as one of the major aspects of language art and teaching children to read is one of the most responsibilities of education. In teaching and learning process, an English teacher of Elementary School is the most influential person in the classroom . Children should have high motivation in learning English. There are two major goals for elementary reading program. First, it is to develop the children’s ability and second, is to develop their interest in reading foreign language. Reading ability depends on many factors. Those factors are understanding about meaning, vocabulary and organizing some ideas. The teacher should take consideration about the teaching technique of reading.

The purpose of this study is to help English teacher employ the teaching technique of reading. The research design that is used is descriptive research. It is concentrated on input to classroom interaction in term of the techniques that are used by English teacher in teaching reading in English classes at SDN Kalipang I Sutojayan Blitar. The result of the study shows that the techniques of teaching reading that are used by the teacher in teaching reading are using picture as the technique and media, and other techniques that make the students interested in the material and avoid boring in reading.

Finally, the writer gives conclusion that is related with the use of the teaching technique of reading. The English program gives to the fourth, fifth and sixth grade students. The teaching technique at fourth grade is combining between using picture and vocabulary ability, guided task; for fifth grade, using a series of action sentence and using picture in the text. And in the sixth grade, they practice it directly with explanation. In addition some decisions of using another technique supports the reading English comprehension.
